An automatic gearbox temperature warning generally means the transmission control system has detected that gearbox or transmission-fluid temperature has risen beyond its expected operating range. It is a warning about excessive heat, but it does not tell you the underlying cause by itself.
The cause may be as straightforward as unusually heavy transmission load, but repeated warnings can point towards low transmission fluid, an oil leak, restricted cooling, excessive torque-converter slip, clutch slip, hydraulic problems or developing internal gearbox wear.

Do not diagnose the gearbox from the warning light alone. Temperature is the result of something happening inside or around the transmission. A proper diagnosis asks why the heat was generated, whether the gearbox is losing fluid, whether cooling is effective and whether excessive internal slip is creating the temperature rise.
Warning appeared once under heavy load
A one-off warning during towing, prolonged climbing, very slow heavy traffic or another high-load condition may be related to temporary heat build-up. It still deserves attention, particularly if it returns during normal driving.

A recurring warning is more concerning because it suggests the transmission is repeatedly exceeding its temperature threshold. Fluid level, fluid condition, leaks, cooling, stored fault codes and actual transmission operation should then be checked.
The warning may switch off after the gearbox cools because temperature has fallen below the control system's warning threshold. Cooling the transmission removes the immediate temperature condition; it does not repair a leak, restore low fluid, unblock a cooler or correct excessive internal slip.

The warning means the transmission control system has detected an excessive-temperature condition, or a temperature-related operating state serious enough to trigger gearbox protection.
