If the gearbox is delayed, raising engine speed while waiting can make the forward clutch apply suddenly at much higher torque. That can increase internal clutch damage and shock the mounts and drivetrain.
Will Delayed Drive Engagement Fail an MOT?
A delay when selecting Drive is not itself tested as an internal automatic gearbox performance item during the MOT. The MOT does not assess forward-clutch fill time, valve-body wear, internal seal condition or Drive engagement speed in the way a transmission specialist would.
