If the MOT expires on 15 May, testing from 16 April allows the existing renewal date to be preserved. Testing earlier can move the next expiry date forward.

If the vehicle remains at the test centre for repair and is retested within the qualifying period, only a partial retest may be needed and this can be free.
Returned Quickly
Certain specified defects can qualify for a free partial retest when the vehicle is returned to the same test centre by the end of the next working day.
Later Return
Other partial-retest rules and charges can apply depending on when the vehicle is returned and what is being retested.
