MOT Question Guide

Does MOT Check Air Conditioning UK?

An MOT does not normally check whether your air conditioning blows cold air. The tester is not carrying out an AC performance test, refrigerant pressure test or air conditioning service.

However, air conditioning and heater faults can still matter if they affect windscreen visibility. If the windscreen cannot be cleared properly because the blower, heater, demister or ventilation system does not work, the issue may become relevant during the MOT.

This guide explains what the MOT does and does not check, whether AC not cold can fail, when demister faults matter and what to inspect before test day.

Quick answer

Does an MOT check air conditioning?

No, not in the way most drivers mean. An MOT does not check whether the air conditioning blows cold, whether the system needs regassing or whether the AC compressor works properly.

A car can normally pass an MOT with air conditioning that does not blow cold air, as long as other safety and visibility requirements are met.

The important exception is visibility. If the ventilation, heater blower or demister cannot clear the windscreen properly, the problem may become relevant because the MOT checks whether the driver has an adequate view of the road.

Mechanic answer

AC comfort is not the MOT issue — visibility is

Cold air from the air conditioning is mainly a comfort and convenience feature. The MOT is not testing cabin comfort.

But the heater, blower and demister system helps clear mist from the windscreen. If the driver cannot see clearly, that is a safety issue.

MOT scope

What Does The MOT Check Around Air Conditioning?

The MOT does not test air conditioning performance, but visibility and safe operation can still matter.

Visibility

Driver's view of the road

The MOT checks that the windscreen and view through it are safe. If misting cannot be cleared, this can be a problem.

Wipers

Wipers and washers

Wipers and washers are checked because they directly affect visibility. Airflow problems may also matter if they prevent screen clearing.

Demister

Windscreen demisting

A working demister helps clear condensation. If the screen remains misted and unsafe, the issue may affect roadworthiness.

Blower

Heater blower operation

A failed blower motor can prevent airflow to the windscreen, especially in wet or cold weather.

Electrical

Obvious electrical safety issues

The MOT is not an AC electrical diagnosis, but unsafe wiring, smoke or obvious electrical danger should be checked.

Leaks

Fluid leaks or water ingress

AC water drainage issues are usually not MOT items, but water leaks affecting electrics or visibility should be investigated.

Not checked

What Air Conditioning Items Are Not Normally Checked During An MOT?

These AC-related items can be annoying or expensive, but they are not usually MOT test items.

AC item Directly checked? Explanation
AC blows cold No The MOT does not test cabin cooling performance.
Refrigerant gas level No The tester does not check AC pressure or refrigerant quantity.
AC compressor condition No Compressor operation is not normally assessed.
Condenser efficiency No Cooling efficiency is outside MOT scope.
AC regas requirement No Needing an AC regas does not normally affect the MOT.
Cabin temperature No The MOT does not measure interior temperature.
AC smell No A mouldy smell is not normally a fail item, but should be cleaned for health and comfort.
Demister rules

Can a demister fault fail an MOT?

A demister fault can become relevant if the windscreen cannot be cleared and the driver's view is affected. The MOT is concerned with visibility and safety, not whether the cabin feels comfortable.

If the blower does not work, air does not reach the screen, or the windscreen repeatedly mists so badly that visibility is unsafe, the car should be repaired before the test.

AC not cold

AC not cold is usually not an MOT failure

If the air conditioning does not blow cold but the heater blower, ventilation and demister still clear the windscreen properly, the car can normally pass the MOT.

The AC may still need repair or regassing, but that is usually a comfort and maintenance issue rather than a direct MOT failure.

Symptoms

Air Conditioning And Demister Symptoms To Check Before MOT

These symptoms do not always mean MOT failure, but they should be checked if they affect visibility or safety.

AC not blowing cold

Usually not an MOT issue by itself, but it may need regassing or repair.

AC not cold guide →

Blower not working

Can become important if air cannot reach the windscreen for demisting.

Windscreen mists badly

Visibility problems should be fixed before the MOT and before driving in poor weather.

Heater not hot

May affect demisting and could also point to coolant, thermostat or heater matrix issues.

Water inside the car

May indicate blocked drains or leaks. Electrical or visibility problems should be inspected.

Failure risk

Air Conditioning MOT Risk Table

Use this table to understand what is usually safe to leave and what should be checked before the MOT.

AC or heater issue Direct MOT fail? Why it matters Best action
AC not blowing cold No Comfort issue, not normally MOT Regas or diagnose when convenient
AC needs regas No Refrigerant level not tested Book AC service
Mouldy AC smell No Not usually a roadworthiness issue Clean AC system
Blower motor not working Possible May affect windscreen clearing Repair before MOT
Demister not clearing screen Possible Driver visibility issue Repair urgently
Heater not hot Possible May affect demisting depending on fault Diagnose coolant/heater system
Windscreen constantly misted Possible Unsafe visibility Fix cause before test
Electrical smoke or burning smell Possible safety concern Potential electrical fault Stop using and inspect
Before MOT

What should you check before the MOT?

  • Check the blower works on different speeds.
  • Check air reaches the windscreen vents.
  • Check the windscreen clears when misted.
  • Check wipers and washers work properly.
  • Check the heater produces warm air.
  • Look for heavy condensation inside the cabin.
  • Check for damp carpets or water leaks.
  • Do not rely only on cold AC for demisting.
  • Fix blower or demister faults before the test.
  • Repair electrical smells, smoke or burning quickly.
Best order

Diagnose visibility problems first

If the AC is not cold but visibility is fine, it is usually not an MOT priority. If the screen will not clear, that is more important.

The best order is:

  1. Check windscreen wipers and washers.
  2. Check blower airflow to the screen.
  3. Check heater temperature.
  4. Check cabin filter condition.
  5. Check for water leaks causing misting.
  6. Then diagnose AC cooling performance.
Cost guide

Air Conditioning And Heater Repair Cost UK

Costs depend on whether the issue is simple regassing, a cabin filter, blower fault, AC leak, compressor problem or heater/coolant fault.

Lower cost

AC regas or cabin filter

If the AC simply needs service or the cabin filter is blocked, repair may be relatively affordable.

Medium cost

Blower or resistor fault

Blower motor, resistor pack or control faults can affect airflow and demisting.

Higher cost

Compressor or leak repair

AC leaks, condensers and compressors can be more expensive, especially on modern vehicles.

Repair Typical UK cost range
Cabin filter replacement£20–£80
AC regas£60–£150
AC leak diagnosis£50–£150
Blower resistor repair£80–£250+
Blower motor replacement£150–£500+
AC condenser replacement£250–£700+
AC compressor replacement£400–£1,200+
Heater matrix repair£500–£1,500+
Frequently asked questions

Does MOT Check Air Conditioning FAQs

Clear answers to common UK driver questions about air conditioning, demisters, visibility and MOT inspections.

Does MOT check air conditioning?

No. Air conditioning cooling performance is not normally checked during the MOT.

Can AC not cold fail MOT?

Usually no. A car can normally pass if the AC does not blow cold, provided visibility and safety are not affected.

Does MOT check the demister?

The MOT is concerned with driver visibility. If the windscreen cannot be cleared properly, it may become an issue.

Can heater blower fail MOT?

Possibly, if the blower fault prevents the windscreen from clearing and affects safe visibility.

Can mouldy AC smell fail MOT?

Usually no. A bad smell is not normally a fail item, but cleaning the system is sensible.

Should I fix AC before MOT?

Fix it before MOT if it affects demisting, visibility, electrical safety or creates serious driving concerns.
