Automatic gearbox diagnostic guide

P0700 Code Meaning UK

P0700 means the engine computer has received a request from the transmission control module (TCM) to switch on the engine management light. It does not tell you exactly what is wrong with the gearbox. Instead, it tells you another transmission fault code is stored inside the gearbox control module and needs to be read with a capable diagnostic scanner.

P0700 code meaning UK
Quick answer

What does P0700 mean?

P0700 simply means the transmission control module has detected a gearbox-related fault and has instructed the engine ECU to illuminate the check engine light.

The important point is that P0700 is usually only an information code. The real fault could be a shift solenoid problem, transmission speed sensor fault, internal gearbox issue, low transmission fluid level or electrical problem stored separately inside the transmission module.

Common symptoms

Signs you may notice

✅ Check engine light illuminated

✅ Gearbox warning message

✅ Automatic gearbox stuck in one gear

✅ Limp mode activated

✅ Harsh gear changes

✅ Delayed shifting

✅ Transmission slipping

✅ Poor acceleration

✅ Vehicle refusing to change gear

Real mechanic advice

P0700 itself rarely identifies the fault

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people replacing gearbox parts purely because they found P0700.

The first thing I would do in the workshop is connect a scanner that can communicate with the transmission module and read the manufacturer-specific gearbox codes.

Nine times out of ten the additional codes tell the real story.

Common causes

Why does P0700 appear?

Low transmission fluid

Low or contaminated ATF can trigger multiple gearbox faults.

Faulty shift solenoid

Electronic solenoids control hydraulic gear changes.

Transmission speed sensor fault

Incorrect speed readings confuse gearbox operation.

Valve body problems

Hydraulic control faults can produce harsh shifting.

Internal gearbox wear

Clutch packs or internal components may be worn.

Wiring or connector faults

Damaged wiring between the ECU and TCM can create communication errors.

Diagnosis

How I would diagnose P0700

✅ Read all engine ECU codes

✅ Read all transmission control module codes

✅ Check live gearbox data

✅ Inspect ATF level and condition

✅ Road test with scanner connected

✅ Check wiring and connectors

✅ Inspect battery voltage and charging system

✅ Perform manufacturer gearbox tests if required

Important

Don't replace the gearbox yet

Many vehicles trigger P0700 because of a faulty sensor or electrical problem rather than catastrophic gearbox failure.

Proper diagnosis can save thousands of pounds.

Can you drive?

Is it safe to keep driving?

If the gearbox enters limp mode, slips badly or refuses to shift correctly, continued driving is not recommended.

Short journeys to a garage may be possible if the vehicle remains controllable, but severe slipping or overheating can cause expensive internal damage.

About this guide

Based on practical gearbox diagnostic experience

Motor Vehicle Expert provides practical UK mechanic-style advice based on real-world diagnostic experience. P0700 should always be treated as the starting point for transmission diagnosis rather than the final answer.

The most important step is retrieving the manufacturer-specific gearbox codes stored inside the transmission control module before replacing expensive components.
